Setting Up a Concrete Batching Plant: Site Planning Checklist

Space, aggregates, cement storage, water, power and traffic flow: the checklist we use before installing a concrete batching and mixing plant.

A concrete batching and mixing plant only performs as well as the site around it. Before installation, walk through this checklist with your project team.

1. Output and concrete grades

How many cubic metres per hour do you need at the peak of the pour? Which grades and admixtures will you produce? These decide the mixer size and the number of aggregate bins.

2. Space and layout

  • Room for aggregate stockpiles and loader movement.
  • A clear one-way route for transit mixers to enter, load and leave.
  • Space for cement silos, water tanks and a control cabin with a view of the loading point.

3. Foundations

Silos and the mixer structure need properly designed foundations. Level, compacted ground is the minimum even for compact or mobile plants.

4. Materials

  • Separate aggregate sizes so they do not mix in the stockpile.
  • Keep cement dry; check silo filters and level indicators.
  • Use clean water and plan storage for at least one day of production.

5. Power and utilities

Confirm the connected load, a reliable supply or generator, lighting for night pours, and drainage for wash-out water.

6. Quality and safety

  • Calibrate weighing systems before the first pour and at regular intervals.
  • Plan for cube testing and record keeping.
  • Guard moving parts and provide safe access to every platform.
