Concrete keeps changing on its way to site. Simple daily care of the drum, blades, water system and gearbox protects both the mixer and the mix.
A transit mixer carries fresh concrete from the batching plant to the pour while keeping it agitated. Looking after the drum and its drive protects both your equipment and the quality of the concrete you deliver.
Every day
- Wash out the drum after the last load. Hardened concrete build-up reduces capacity and unbalances the drum.
- Check the water system (pump, tank, gauge and valves) so the driver can clean chutes and, where allowed, adjust slump correctly.
- Inspect the chutes and hopper for wear and cracks.
- Look for hydraulic or gearbox leaks under the drum.
Every week
- Grease drum rollers and the chute pivot.
- Check the drum track ring and rollers for wear.
- Check the oil cooler and the hydraulic oil level.
Protecting concrete quality
- Keep the drum turning at agitating speed during travel; mix at full speed before discharge.
- Avoid adding water at site beyond what the mix design allows: it weakens the concrete.
- Plan routes and delivery times so concrete is placed within its workable time.
Mixing blades
Worn spiral blades leave concrete behind in the drum and slow discharge. Measure blade height regularly and rebuild or replace them before they lose their shape.
