Most crusher breakdowns are predictable. These ten habits keep your jaw, cone and VSI crushers running longer between shutdowns.
Unplanned downtime is the most expensive cost in any crushing plant. The good news is that most failures give plenty of warning. Build these ten habits into your daily and weekly routine.
- Walk the plant every shift. Listen for new noises, look for oil leaks, loose bolts and spillage before you start the feeder.
- Grease by the schedule, not by feel. Over-greasing bearings causes heat just as under-greasing causes wear. Keep a grease log for each point.
- Check oil temperature and pressure. On cone crushers, a rising return-oil temperature is often the first sign of a problem.
- Keep the feed choke-fed and even. A full, steady crushing chamber wears liners evenly and produces better shape.
- Remove tramp metal. A magnet or metal detector over the conveyor protects the crusher from bucket teeth and drill bits.
- Rotate and replace wear parts on time. Turning jaw plates end-to-end doubles their life; waiting too long damages the seats behind them.
- Tension belts correctly. Slipping V-belts burn out quickly and reduce capacity.
- Keep screens clean. Blinded or broken screen mesh sends wrong-size material back to the crusher and overloads it.
- Control dust. Dust destroys seals, filters and electrical panels; water sprays and covers are cheap protection.
- Record everything. Wear rates, tonnage and stoppages tell you when to order spares before you need them.
